The Last Pose

It is not an uncommon sight to see photographers chasing funeral processions headed towards the Hindu cremation ghats in Varanasi in Northern India. Their subject? The corpse. Corpse photography has been a business at the funeral ghats in Varanasi for at least 13 years. The photographers sit in their tiny studios all day in the narrow lanes by the ghats, waiting for the next procession to pass by. Relatives and kin at the funeral opt to have their photos taken with the deceased so that it can be used as a proof of death, since the crematorium at the ghat does not provide death certificates. Some of the people attending the funeral are not related to the deceased, but still use these photographs to claim a share of the deceased's property. A photograph from this series was published in the June 2013 issue of The Caravan magazine, alongside an article by Omkar Khandekar.
